Mothers Day at the Court House
Having spent a fair chunk of my life out in western Victoria – Smythesdale has always been a small town that slows down your trip to Ballarat, however since the fantastic transformation of the Court House Hotel, this is now a place to not only stop on the way through but to make a special trip to. What was a small country pub with not much to offer other than a pot and a game of pool with the locals is now the perfect place to showcase the local produce.
After a quick chat with the extended family it was time to order, I went with the ‘can’t go wrong choice’ of lamb shanks and ordered a glass of red to go with. The ‘wine list’ was typed up on the back of the menu with not too much fuss, especially as I was only after a glass, but the decision was simple and I decided to go with something I know well.
I realise I do keep spruiking them but I am a fan of most reds from the ‘not too commercial’ vineyards in Victoria’s Pyrenees. The Mt Avoca Cab Sav has got simple wholesome food written all over it and was the perfect accompaniment here. It is a spicy little fella, all vintages I have had are, I am certainly a fan. If you are after something inexpensive with rustic food this is a sure bet.
