Wildwood ($18)

Pinot Noir

7.5/10

As mentioned in an earlier issue we recently visited the Sunbury area.  Day one of our trip was Good Friday therefore most were shut up for the day.  However, after leafing through our ever reliable copy of Melways from 1995 we stumbled upon a winery that was not only open but also fantastic.  As with most winery’s the setting they sit in is normally very picturesque – Wildwood is no exception.  Situated in a valley, which according to the sign on the way in it is just 14 kms from Tullamarine Airport, you still feel like you are well and truly in the middle of nowhere.

Our host WG Stott took us through a very impressive line of tastings of which three were purchased.  These choices were all due to the fact that although very familiar varieties they tasted far from familiar.  The Pinot Noir, which we matched with some home cooked steak and mash (can’t go wrong with that), was great.  Very strong pinot with a brutish plum flavour and aroma.  The only issue I have here was although it is right for drinking now I reckon a couple more years would allow this to just get better and better.

Great region.
