Spud’s wines – Issue 2

Blue Pyrenees 2006 (Unknown)

Pinot Noir

8/10

As a rather reliable customer of this underrated winery from the Pyrenees in Western Victoria – I tend to get the occasional call from their cellar door with an offer or two.  A couple of years ago I was talked into buying six of their Estate Reserve Red 1996 (awesome drop) by throwing a few extra bucks their way they threw in a half dozen of the Pinot Noir.

Recently we finished off our last bottle of this little beauty.  Whilst giving it some breathing time the unmistakeable aroma, which reminds me of the raspberry lollies you buy from Sovereign Hill, wafts into the room – however the flavour is where this one comes into its own, very velvety and much more robust than other Pinot’s you get from other regions.  The variety is well known for being very difficult to grow especially if grown in a region with volcanic clay crappy soil in drought central.  However this one has gotten over this issue and toughened the hell up - the rich flavour here combined with the subtleties that all ‘good’ Pinot’s have is darn right impressive.  Good Pinot’s in this region are difficult to find and good luck finding a bottle of this vintage, but if you do you’ll love it.  Enjoy with any rich food or chocolate.
